A more precise approach to prostate cancer treatment

For select men with localized prostate cancer, advanced focal therapies may treat the cancer while preserving more of what matters most. Jurige Prostate Center is one of the few practices in the country dedicated to these precision-based approaches.

What is focal therapy?

The focal therapy difference

Historically, prostate cancer treatment often meant treating the entire prostate. Focal therapy was developed to offer a more precise option for appropriately selected men—targeting the area of concern while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

Maintain bladder control*

Treatment where the muscle behind continence is left alone wherever the case allows.

Maintain sex life*

Treatment designed to spare the nerves behind sexual function.

Maintain options*

Surgery and radiation remain available if they are ever needed.

Targets affected area

Focal therapy

Focal therapy targets the smallest area necessary to treat the cancer, sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. The nerves and muscles that control urination and erections are left alone wherever they can be. Precise treatment, with as much of the prostate preserved as the case allows.

Targets whole glanD

Traditional therapy

Whole gland treatment, surgery or radiation, treats the entire prostate. For advanced cancer it can be the only choice. But the cost is high. Treating the whole gland often leaves men with permanent incontinence and sexual dysfunction, even when the cancer itself was small and contained.

The three steps we take before any procedure is matched

Every man's case is different. The location of the cancer, the imaging, the biopsy, the personal priorities, all of it shapes the right path forward. Dr. Jurige reviews each case personally and determines the right approach before any procedure enters the conversation.

1

1

Map the disease

Review PSA, MRI, biopsy, risk level, and prior treatment history.

2

2

Match procedure

Compare focal options based on what needs to be treated and what needs to be protected.

3

3

Establish a plan

Understand the procedure, follow-up, cost, and realistic expectations.

Outcomes vary by patient and are not guaranteed. Statements regarding the preservation of bladder control, sexual function, quality of life, recovery time, future treatment options, or other potential benefits reflect the intended goals and published clinical experience associated with focal therapy but should not be interpreted as promises of individual results. Every patient's anatomy, cancer characteristics, medical history, treatment goals, and response to therapy are unique.

Not all patients are candidates for focal therapy or any specific procedure. Treatment recommendations are based on a comprehensive evaluation that may include imaging, pathology, biopsy results, medical history, physical examination, and physician judgment. Certain patients may experience treatment-related side effects, complications, disease progression, recurrence, or the need for additional therapy despite appropriate treatment.

Any statistics, outcome data, survival rates, complication rates, or references to published studies are provided for educational context only and may not reflect the experience of any individual patient. Clinical outcomes reported in medical literature are influenced by patient selection, physician experience, follow-up duration, and study methodology.

Some forms of focal therapy are covered by insurance; however, some are still considered “investigational” (including Laser Focal Therapy).  International consensus states that patients should either be enrolled in an IRB-approved clinical trial or contribute their data to an IRB-approved registry, which is the HALO way.

Use of this website, completion of online forms, email communication, telephone inquiries, scheduling requests, or participation in a Fast-Track Assessment does not establish a physician-patient relationship. A physician-patient relationship is established only after a formal consultation and mutual agreement to proceed with care.
